Ash Barty claims women's number one ranking

Indigenous tennis star Ashleigh Barty has become Australia's first women's world number one player in 43 years. Barty defeated doubles partner, Julia Goerges, in the final of the Birmingham Classic to take the top ranking. It comes just two weeks after she won her first Grand Slam at the French Open.


Australia has been knocked out of the 2019 Women's World Cup in France on the first day of the round of 16.

Norway defeated the Matildas in a heartbreaking penalty shootout following 120 minutes of play, allowing the side to progress to the quarter-finals.

England was the first side to progress to the quarter-finals following a win over Cameroon, and shortly after, France joined them.

But both matches highlighted the contentious nature of the Video Assistant Referee at this tournament.
