It's been a big weekend in sport, with the Australian Open tennis tournament weeding out the contenders from the pretenders.

Whilst all the Australian interest at the Australian Open tennis was on local hopes Nick Kyrgios and Ashleigh Barty this past weekend, there are old favourites who just keep on keeping on.

And foremost amongst these is Roger Federer.

The defending men's singles champion advancing once again to the fourth round with a straight sets victory over Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Despite what seems to be the dominance of one of the greatest athletes to play any sport, Federer retains something of a humility in his approach, that endears him to so many around the world.

Speaking to Channel Seven after his third round win against Gasquet, Federer said the match was a lot closer than it might seem.

"I think I was maybe able to stay a little bit more on the offensive than he was. And maybe I was protecting my own serve a little bit better than him. The second set was tight. The match was close. The end could have gone to a tie-break, and then, you never know (what might have happened). So, you've got to focus until the very end. Richard played well, and me too, and I just happened to win tonight."
