A decade after Croatia requested his extradition from Australia, Vasiljkovic has officially been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity. The indictment, issued last Friday by Croatias county prosecutor, came one day before Captain Dragan, 61, was due to be released from custody and six months after he was extradited over allegations dating back to the early 1990s. Mr Vasiljkovics lawyer, SladCankovic, told Croatian SBS Program the Australian government was covering all the expenses of Mr Vasiljkovics legal team.
Mr Vasiljkovic has been charged with personally participating in the physical torture of prisoners during interrogation. He is also charged with murder and abuse of prisoners in February 1993 in the village of Bruska where his units training centre was based, near the town of Benkovac.
He faces extra charges over an attack on villages in 1991, including Jukinac and Gornji Vidusevac.
