David Bowie Dies After 18-Month Cancer Battle. The singer celebrated his 69th birthday on Friday when he released his 25th album, called Blackstar. On January 8, Bowies 69th birthday, his wife Iman shared a poignant image of a smiling and besuited Bowie standing in a doorway, in what would turn out to be her last shared photo of the star.

In 1969 he made his first appearance in the charts with Space Oddity.

A string of albums followed, before 1972's The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars made him an international star.

The 1980s saw him combine his pop career with appearances in films including Labyrinth, Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and Absolute Beginners.
