Depopulation of regional Australia, the case of Tasmania

New report analyses issues and options within Tasmania's population Source: University of Tasmania
Tasmania is Australia's oldest state but also the state with the nation's fastest ageing population. It's found itself in uncharted territory when it comes to tackling the causes of depopulation. Dr. Lisa Denny, research fellow and demographer with the Institute for The Study of Social Change, at the University of Tasmania, last week released a new report detailing possible outcomes for Tasmania's population future. She says there is no simple way to approach the fact that by mid century, Tasmania's population will start to significantly decline. Part of the problem is the exodus from regional areas into urban hot-spots, an unavoidable side effect of globalisation. Dr. Denny spoke to Sofija Petrovic about this report.
