Former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic jailed for life over war genocide

Ratko Mladic, former commander of the Bosnian Serb Army, at his trial judgement at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

Former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has been given a life sentence by United Nations judges, after finding him guilty of genocide and war crimes in the brutal Balkans conflicts over two decades ago. As military commander of Bosnian Serb forces against Bosnian Croat and Bosniak armies, Mladic had been on trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for the past five years. Among the crimes for which the 74 year old was convicted is the 1995 massacre of more than 7,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica – described as one of the most horrific events of the violent break-up of the former Yugoslavia.
