Professor Alan Dearn is a part of the Serbian- Australian archaeological team undertaking a five-year program of archaeological excavations, research, publication and conservation on the Roman site Glac near Sremska Mitrovica. This project engages a team from the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade and the University of Sydney.
"We started digging last year but 2018 is an exiting year for us because we are going back (in Serbia) for longer this year. We are going for six weeks, we are taking more students from Australia and also from Serbia to take part in a dig. And we have much better sense this year of what we are going to start with", said Dr Dearn for SBS.
"My particular job is to develop educational programs around the GLAC site I had the opportunity in December to go back to Serbia and to spend time in Sremska Mitorivca, particularly with the Gimazija in Mitrovica. So I spoke to a lot of students there and I spoke to teachers ... So I am very exited that this year my particular job will be running an education program for students from Sremska Mitrovica to take a part in the archeological dig and to learn a bit more about the archeology and history of their town."
