Huawei pleads its case for role in Australia's 5G technology

The Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei's Australian chairman, John Lord, says the company's equipment is safe and secure and the business poses no threat to the country's national security. Huawei says it is leading the world in 5G technology and Australia should not be left behind with what Mr Lord calls "short-sighted" bans based on security fears.

The government is set to introduce draft laws to federal parliament updating military call-out powers, making it easier for state and territory governments to call in special forces troops to respond to terror attacks. Currently, states must declare a situation out of control and beyond their resources before the military can be asked to help local authorities.
