The head of Australia's Home Affairs department has told a parliamentary inquiry into press freedom the person who leaked a document to News Corporation journalist Annika Smethurst should serve jail time.

The inquiry comes two months after the AFP raided the Canberra home of Ms Smethurst and the Sydney headquarters of the ABC after the agency received referrals to investigate the leaking of classified documents to the media.
