In the conceert on this Wednesday in the Melbourne Recital Centre, Ensemble Anja & Zlatna will explore the phenomena of dreams, nature and the integral questions to existence, which have long found expression through folk music. Focussing primarily on Balkan folk music, this program ranges from the ecstatic meditations of the medieval Orthodox chant Radusya nevesto to the prophetic words of the Virgin Mary to her infant Jesus in Falconieris hypnotic Hor che Tempo. Ensemble Anja & Zlatna is known for its beautiful melodic lines and complex rhythms from Eastern Europe, the Middle East and beyond.
The ensembles unique sound comes from the unusual blend of flute, bass, percussion, harpsichord and voices. Their folk songs, enhanced with baroque improvisations, are both moving and invigorating.
