New coronavirus measures in Australia: What is open and what is not

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announces pubs, clubs and cinemas among institutions to close while schools remain open.


According to the decision of the Australian Federal Government, the following institutions will remain open:

  • Supermarkets
  • Pharmacies
  • Restaurants and cafes for takeaway only 
  • Public transport
  • Banks
  • Petrol stations 
  • Post offices 
  • Convenience stores 
  • Freight and logistics 
  • Food delivery 
  • Bottle shops 
  • Hairdressers and beauticians 
  • Shopping centres
  • Schools though school holidays have been pushed forward in VIC and ACT. 
The following institutions will close:

  • Pubs 
  • Clubs
  • Nightclubs
  • Licensed areas of hotels 
  • Cinemas 
  • Entertainment venues
  • Casinos
  • Indoor places of worship including churches 
  • Indoor sporting venues
  • Gyms
