Overseas parcel tax could be on its way

Australians buying goods from overseas that are shipped here by parcel could face a new tax, on top of the existing Goods and Services Tax (GST). A federal government proposal has been put forward to put a new flat-rate tax, of a yet-to-be-determined rate - on all imported parcels from overseas with contents that are worth less than $1,000.

A federal government proposal has been put forward to put a new flat-rate tax, of a yet-to-be-determined rate - on all imported parcels from overseas with contents that are worth less than $1,000.


JP Morgan and NAB argue the economic forces holding wage growth and better working conditions back are currently too strong, and the standard of living experienced by the majority of Australians now is as good as it is going to get for many years.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says Australia will either resettle or send back the refugees who are still on Manus Island. The Papua New Guinea government says it has asked Australia to set a deadline to move on the refugees. It says only 84 of the 600 refugees from Manus have been resettled in the United States.
