In Australia, women are having babies older than ever before. While there is a similar number of women aged 35 and over who are having babies, compared with 1950 -1960, the number of women 35 and younger having babies has dropped very significantly. 1 in 6 Australian couples will experience difficulty in conceiving, and many will turn to IVF providers for help. But what kind of help are they receiving? Can Australia trust the IVF industry? A new Victorian government inquiry in to the ethics and practices of IVF clinics is currently taking submissions, and Sofija Petrović spoke to Professor Luk Rombauts, medical director of Monash IVF, an established IVF provider in Australia, about whether or not this inquiry was necessary.
