Acting prime minister and finance minister Mathias Cormann [MUH-tee-iss] says there isn't a need to cut immigration but instead to carefully choose who is let into the country.
It comes as the former Prime Minister Tony Abbott ramps up his calls to cut immigration levels to ease pressure on employment and housing.
But Mr Cormann says that isn't the focus of the government.
"I mean Australia's immigration intake today is lower than it has been at its peak under the previous Labor government. The most important thing with our immigration intake is that we attract the right people to make Australia their home. Obviously, the key is to attract people with the skills and the attitudes to help make Australia an even greater place than it already is."
