The number of home loan approvals for owner occupiers has fallen 2.3 per cent, lagging market expectations for a decline of 1.0 per cent.
The value of total housing finance also fell in December, by 1.6 per cent to $32.88 billion, seasonally adjusted data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show.
The value of new home loan approvals for owner-occupiers was down 1.0 per cent on November, while the value of investor loans was down 2.6 per cent.
The Australian dollar slipped on the news, with the local currency falling to 77.72 US cents from 77.85 US cents just ahead of the 1130 data release.
