The White House says United States President Donald Trump has spoken to Senator John Cornyn about gun legislation and supports efforts to improve the federal background check system.
It follows a fatal shooting at a Florida school which killed 17 people.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckerbee Sanders says the pair discussed the bipartisan bill Senator Cornyn and Democratic senator Chris Murphy introduced to improve federal compliance and talks are ongoing.
Student survivors of a mass shooting that killed 17 people at a Florida high school called for gun restrictions on Saturday during an angry and somber rally, but attendees at a nearby gun show said firearms could not be blamed for the massacre.
