A story of a Tamil woman who is waiting for kidney transplant

Nearly 2,000 Australians are waiting for a transplant while 12,000 others are on dialysis, battling, waiting and hoping for an organ donation to come through. A Tamil woman (doen't want to be identified) who is battling with kidney disease for many years and waiting for a donor, shares her story with Praba Maheswaran.

Organs that can be transplanted include heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas or the insulin-producing islet cells of the pancreas, which can be transplanted separately as a treatment for diabetes. Tissues that can be donated include heart valves, heart tissue, blood veins, bone, veins, tendons, ligaments, skin or parts of the eye. Blood and tissue types need to match for a transplant to be successful. Organs from donors of the same ethnic background as the person needing a transplant are more likely to be a close match.
