Australian Cinema: Samson & Delilah (dir. Warwick Thornton 2009)

Source: SBS
In his directorial debut, Indigenous film maker Warwick Thornton depicts a confronting love story of two teenagers, Samson and Delilah. By presenting a series of troubling events in the backdrop of the spectacular Central Australian landscape, Director Thornton provides a snapshot of the impact of colonisation as experienced through the helplessness and hopelessness of Samson & Delilah, who live in a remote Aboriginal community near Alice Springs. Narrated with sensitivity and realism, the film won the Caméra d'Or (Gold Camera Award) for Best First Feature Film at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Dr Dhamu Pongiyannan presents an analysis of this powerful film for SBS Tamil listeners.
