An agreement between the Indian and Sri Lankan (then Ceylon) governments allowed about halfa million people (recruited from Tamil Nadu India to work in tea, coffee, and coconut plantations of Ceylon by the British) to be sent back to India. Pon Jayaseelan was one of them. He was not even ten years old at the time of leaving the country of his birth.


Pon Jayaseelan is a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) party.  He was elected as a member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Gudalur Constituency in May 2021.
