China takes first steps to ending diplomatic freeze with Australia

China has taken small, tentative steps to ending its diplomatic freeze against Australia; the Chinese Premier yesterday reaching out to congratulate Prime Minister Albanese.


While it was the country's second in charge, it’s a small sign that ties could improve under the new government. But Beijing’s increased presence in the Pacific - in particular a controversial security pact with Solomon Islands - could overshadow any rapprochement.  In the meantime, Foreign Minister Penny Wong has embarked on a mission to step up Pacific engagement - flying to Fiji to meet with Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama - coinciding with a Pacific trip by the Chinese Foreign Minister.
