In the Tamil Epic Silapathikaaram, Kannagi is depicted as a chaste and docile woman for a long time. When confronted with injustice Kannagi transforms into a fiery character and gives the King a piece of her mind. Her words are so powerful that the king gives up his throne and the city is consumed in flames.
The story of Kannagi has been given a new context in two short-films: "I Am Kannagi" and "Stories of Kannagi". Kulasegaram Sanchayan talks to the makers Jiva Parthipan and Zanny Begg.
