Dr.Va.Supa.Manickanar, a great Tamil scholar and a researcher, was the Principal at Alagappa College, Karaikudi, Professor of Tamil and Dean of Indian Languages at Annamalai University and Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University. The Tamil Nadu Govt. utilised his wiser counsel in the formation of Thanjai Tamil Palkalaikazhagam. Dr.Manickanar spearheaded various Tamil movements including Eazhilam Tamil and Tamil VazhikKalvi Iyakkam. He was awarded posthumously the Thiruvalluavar Virudhu by Tamil Nadu Govt. and his books were nationalised by the Tamil Nadu Govt in 2006.His collection of about 4500 books were donated to the library of Alagappa University. The "College Road" at Karaikudi was renamed as Dr.Manickanar salai. As per his last will, the Dr.Va.Supa.Manickanar Arakkattalai was created and the trust is working for the betterment of health, education of people of Melasivapuri village. Dr.Mu.Elangovan Assistant Professor of Tamil at K. M. Centre for Postgraduate Studies, Government of Puducherry recalls Dr.Manickanars contribution to the Tamil society.
