Sarathkumar is the founding president of a political party, the All India Egalitarian People Party (Akila Indhiya Samathuva Makkal Katchi, also known as AISMK). After making his debut in the South Indian film industry in 1986, Sarathkumar has acted over 100 films. He was the former president of the South Indian Artistes' Association, locally known as Nadigar Sangam (2006-15), was the former Member of the Indian Parliament (2001-06), and he was the former Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (2011-16) as well.
