Born on February 24, 1948 in a family that served Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar of Mysore, she was named Komalavalli at birth. She lost her father when she was just two, and her mother started working in films to support the family. Circumstances forced the young Jayalalitha to enter the film industry later.
