An AVO is an Apprehended Violence Order. It is an order to protect victims of domestic violence when they are fearful of future violence or threats to their safety. They are sometimes called restraining orders or protection orders. There are two types of AVOs in NSW: Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) & Apprehended Personal Violence Order (APVO). Most of the states in Australia have similar laws, explains Lawyer and social activist Dr.Chandrika Subramaniyan who is a solicitor and barrister in the Supreme Court of New south Wales and High Court of Australia.
