Celebrations and protests at Melbourne's annual day of colour and cruelty

A crowd of more than 80 thousand people flocked to Flemington, for the 163rd running of the Melbourne Cup, with an overseas visitor taking home the big prize. The usual sparkling array of fashions were on show, while police made arrests outside as protesters took to the streets.
