Mental Health: What is PTSD

Around one in five Australians experience mental illness every year. Despite the scale of the problem – the stigma remains. As October is a mental health month, Maheswaran Prabaharan is speaking to psychiatrists Dr Sivaruby Thavakulasingam regarding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Dr. Sivaruby Thavakulasingam is a locally trained consultant psychiatrist who is a staff specialist at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District and is a visiting medical officer (VMO) at St John of God Richmond Hospital. Dr Thavakulasingam’s private practice rooms are located in Kingswood. She specialises in treating anxiety disorders including PTSD, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, ADHD, perinatal psychiatry and drug and alcohol related disorders. Dr. Sivaruby Thavakulasingam is trained in a range of psychotherapies such as conversational model of psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as various pharmacotherapies.
