A counter conference to the annual gathering of mining companies and government officials IMARC (International Mining and Resources Conference) happened last week. They talked about, “Beyond Mining: Protecting Land, Water & Life.” Bridging Lanka is an NGO that operates in North West of Sri Lanka which is running a campaign to limit an Australian mining operation mine Ilmenite. They claim that mining ilmenite with deplete fauna & flora in that area and will have a long-term effect on the environment. Kulasegaram Sanchayan reports with comments from Jeremy Ahamed Liyanage (Executive Director), and Rojan of Bridging Lanka.

Multiple attempts were made to get in touch with Geological Survey & Mines Bureau and the Central Environmental Authority of Sri Lanka, but neither authorities responded at the time of broadcast.
