Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of India, are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities. ‘Padma Shri’ is awarded for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Indian Republic Day every year. This year the President of India has approved conferment of 85 Padma Awards. Six of the recipients are from Tamil Nadu. Rajagopalan Vasudevan, an Indian scientist who has explored the depths of waste management, is currently a visiting professor at Thiyagarajah College of Engineering. Prof Vasudevan's research that mainly deals with waste management specifically use of waste plastics for road construction earns him a Padma Shri award.
