Perunchithiranar – The Father of Tamil Nationalism

Perunchithiranar (1933 - 1995), one of the most prolific Tamil writers of the 20th century, had produced nearly 40 publications in Tamil. As a highly-respected scholar, poet, journalist and social activist, he promoted the eradication of religious superstition among Tamils. While opposing the cultural hegemony of Aryan-Brahmins and the imposition of Hindi language, he relentlessly advocated for the independence of Tamil Nadu from India. He was sent to jail several times for his uncompromising views on Tamil Nationalism. Dr Dhamu Pongiyannan presents this week’s Thamil Thadam.
