Putin puts nuclear weapons on standby

Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked for nuclear weapons to be made ready to launch, ordering the Defence Minister to place the army's deterrent forces on high alert.

The move has triggered the UN Security Council to call a rare general assembly session.
