The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) has called for the immediate release of a Tamil asylum seeker (Kumar – not his real name) held in Australia’s detention centre network. On 28 May 2019, the WGAD issued an opinion regarding Kumar, and found the Government of Australia to be in contravention of five articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), and four articles of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). This includes the ICCPR article regarding Kumar’s recognition (or lack of) before the law. Alison Battisson of "Human Rights For All" has been campaigning for the release of Kumar from the Detention Centre. Alison talks to Kulasegaram Sanchayan about Kumar's plight and her campaign.
