Singapore Airlines Turbulence: What happened?

One man is dead and at least thirty others are injured, after a Singapore Airlines flight hit severe turbulence en route to Singapore from London. What happened and is this turbulence could be avoided? Ms Gurukanthi Dhinakaran who is a Flight Instructor with experience in safe flight operations in compliance with policies and procedures explains more.
