Tamil woman embarks on a 40,000 Kilometer global voyage

Two women officers from the Indian Navy are undertaking a remarkable eight-month journey to circumnavigate the globe, covering an astounding 40,000 kilometres at sea.

Lieutenant Commanders Rupa Devadasan from Puducherry and Dilna K from the Indian Navy are leading this extraordinary expedition under the banner of “Sagar Parikrama 2.” Kulasegaram Sanchayan had the opportunity to interview Rupa while their vessel was docked near Perth, Australia, marking the end of the first leg of their ambitious journey.

Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff flagged off the Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition from Ocean Sailing Node, INS Mandovi, Goa on 02 Oct 24.

If successful, this voyage will make them the first Indian women to circumnavigate the globe on a ship, a feat of courage, determination, and resilience. In the interview, Rupa shares her inspiring story, shedding light on her upbringing, the rigorous preparation leading up to this endeavour, the challenges encountered along the way, and the joyful moments that make the journey unforgettable.

After a 39-day voyage at sea, the two women officers arrived at their first port of call in Perth, having covered 4,900 nautical miles.
