A nasal spray of the oxytocin, sometimes known as the 'cuddle chemical' or the 'love drug', may be useful in treating problem drinking. The hormone is mostly known for its role in inducing labour or making people affectionate and form social bonds. A study of alcohol-dependent rats was carried out by scientists at the National institute of Drug Abuse in the United States and published in the Journal PLOS Biology.
