Trump takes steps to reduce protection of national monuments

US president Donald Trump has signed a proclamation ordering a significant reduction in protection of two national monuments in the state of Utah. Unlike national parks that can only be created by an act of Congress, national monuments can be designated unilaterally by presidents under the century-old Antiquities Act, a law meant to protect sacred sites, artifacts and historical objects. But the move has angered politicians as well as environmental campaigners.
