The passing of Intizar Hussain has left a void in the world of Urdu literature.
Renowned for his poetry, novels, short stories, fiction and non-fiction writing, Hussain, 92, breathed his last on Tuesday and was laid to rest on Wednesday.
He studied Urdu literature in India, before moving to Lahore where he started working as a journalist and a columnist.
An asset to Urdu literature, he was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2013 for his novel Basti that was written in 1979. The novel’s English translation earned it the honour.
A year later, he was given the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres award for his contribution to the literature, while he also received Pakistan’s prestigious civilian award, Sitara-e-Imtiaz.
