Australian has abolished the 457 visa program in hopes to have more local jobs.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said in a video message that Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs.
He has also announced that the 457 visa program will be replaced by another program that will give employers access to foreign workers.
We will no longer allow 457 visas to be passports to the jobs that could and should go to Australians
"We are putting jobs first, we are putting Australians first," Mr Turnbull says in the video.
"Australia is the most successful multicultural nation in the world. We are an immigration nation but the fact remains: Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs. So we are abolishing the 457 visas, the visas that bring temporary foreign workers into our country. We will no longer allow 457 visas to be passports to the jobs that could and should go to Australians."
He also announced replacing the visa by a new temporary visa "specifically designed to recruit the best and the brightest in the national interest."
"The new visa will better target genuine skill shortages including in regional Australia," the prime minister says.
"It will include new requirements including previous work experience, better English language proficiency and labour market testing."
Mr Turnbull has also announced establishing a fund to train Australians to fill skills gaps.
