Haider Ali, a dual citizen of Pakistan and Australia has been sentenced to two years in prison by the ACT Supreme Court, after he was found guilty of two counts of indecency without consent and one count of sexual intercourse without consent.

During the trial which wrapped up on December 17, the court was told that Ali assaulted the female victim during their stay at a friend’s residence, after running into each other at a Canberra nightspot.

During the incident, which occurred in October 2016, the court heard that the victim verbalised “no” while the man was committing the offence.
The court noted that this is a case involving the sexual assault of a woman in circumstances in which the offender hoped that the assault would lead to some consensual sexual activities.

The court was told the victim messaged a friend following the incident.
“Omfg, it’s Haider from work he keeps trying to bang and I’m like trying to sleep and he keeps touching me," the message read.

A few days later, Ali messaged an apology to the victim.

Ali left Australia for Pakistan during the initial trials and was extradited back after being taken into custody in the UK.

He has been in custody in Australia since July 12, 2019.
