Is Pakistan repeating 1992 Cricket World Cup history?

The green shirts have so far won two and lost three matches along with a match with no result, which is the same journey they took in the 1992 World Cup.

After a comfortable win by Pakistan against South Africa, cricket pundits and fans are wondering if it is a mere coincidence or if the Shaheens are flying the same path to the glory which they were on twenty seven years ago.

Following are some facts that make it hard to believe how a team is going through something so similar.

Pakistan's 1992 vs 2019 World Cup performance so far

Pakistan,

  • started poorly, winning only the first of the five initial pool matches.
  • lost their first match to West Indies, won the 2nd, washed out 3rd match, lost the 4th and 5th matches and then won the sixth one.
  • will play the next match against New Zealand. The Kiwis were unbeaten in 1992 and so far it is the same situation this year

Some don't agree.

However, compared to the 1992 Cricket World Cup, there are ten teams playing in the 2019 World Cup. Also, instead of Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are part of the tournament. Pakistan will be playing both the teams later on in the tournament.

Pakistan will play Afghanistan on 29th June and later with Bangladesh on 5th July 2019.
