Nisha Rao says that she became a lawyer to provide justice to other transgenders in the community.
But even for her becoming a lawyer was a major challenge as she could not afford the law books.
"I faced many problems during my law education. I did not have money for books and college fees so I had to beg at traffic lights on the streets during the daytime and take classes in the evening. This way I acquired my education.
"My goal, my vision, my dream is to become Pakistan’s first transgender judge."
One of Rao’s clients, Jeya Alvi, said that she brought her case to Nisha Rao because she might be able to better handle the case and empathise with her.
“My case pertains to harassment. Being a working lady, I have to face difficulties.
"I chose Nisha to be my lawyer because I feel that she can represent me best since transgenders are subject to frequent harassment in our society. She can understand my case better than any other lawyer.
"She is dealing with it quite satisfactorily and I am very hopeful that I will get justice."
Nisha Rao practices law in the largest city of Pakistan, Karachi.
