A 32-year-old man was stopped for a baggage examination at Perth airport by Australian Border Force (ABF) after arriving from Dubai.
During the examination officers allegedly found objectionable material on his mobile phone in the form of a number of videos depicting sexual activity involving children and animals.
The man has been charged with one count of Importation of a Prohibited Import being Tier 2 goods under s.233BAB(5) of the Customs Act 1901.
He appeared in the Perth’s Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to reappear on 26th October.
ABF’s Regional Commander for Western Australia, Rod O’Donnell, says the border force is committed to doing all it can do to prevent the importation of abhorrent material into Australia.
“Visitors should be aware that possession of child exploitation material is viewed very seriously under Australian law,” Commander O’Donnell said.
“The maximum penalty for the importation of child exploitation material is 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $525,000." Image
“Tackling child exploitation is an operational priority for the ABF as part of its role protecting the border from individuals who may pose a threat to the community.”
The man was remanded by the Court to reappear in the same court on 26 October 2018.
