US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad on Wednesday.

This visit is the first high level US visit to the new government, looking to “reset” the relations between the countries.

Talking to the journalists after the meeting, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said today Secretary Pompeo visited here and it was a high-level visit with Pakistan after a very long time.
“You know it better than me that the relations were strained and stalled.

The obvious thing which I felt was this, which is positive, that today's meeting has created an atmosphere to reset this bilateral relationship ending the suspension. It is a good development.

Secretary Pompeo has invited me to Washington. God willing, when I visit New York for the United Nations session, I intend to have a further engagement with him. We will have a follow up of today's talks there."

Mike Pompeo also met with Pakistan's army chief, Qamar Javed Bajwa and his Pakistani counterpart, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
Earlier Mr Pompeo said the United States and Pakistani militaries have continued to work together, despite other tensions, and that gives the countries something they can use as they try and re-set their relationship.

“We still got a long way to go, lots more discussion to be had. But the relationship military-to-military is one that has remained in a place where some of the other relationships haven't.

They've still continued to have relationships; they've worked on lots of projects that are important together. And I hope we can use that as one of the foundational elements as well.”

It aimed to smooth over tensions after President Donald Trump took a tough new line towards Pakistan over longstanding accusations that it is not doing enough to root out Afghan Taliban fighters on its territory.

The United States has withheld $800 million in overall assistance this year, cuts Pakistan says are unwarranted as it incurs expenses in fighting militants who threaten U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
