Mr Abbott repeated on Australia Day his pre-election pledge to release a draft proposal for constitutional change for public consultation by September.
Calling the push for constitutional recognition ''a very important national crusade'', Mr Abbott said he wanted a referendum ''as soon as possible'' but has not outlined a timeline for a vote.
