The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague has rejected China's claim to economic rights over large areas of the South China Sea, in a case brought by the Philippines.


China's efforts to claim large areas of the South China Sea have been dealt a setback, with an international court dismissing its claims of historic rights.

 

The case could have ramifications for future legal action, trade ties and international relations.
