North Korea's sixth and largest nuclear test over the weekend is prompting further calls from the United Nations Security Council for tougher action.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and United States President Donald Trump have spent half an hour on the phone, with much of discussion focused on the threat posed by North Korea.

South Korea has raised the idea of bringing back tactical US nuclear weapons to the Korean peninsula in response to North Korea's latest massive nuclear test.
