Prime Minister Scott Morrison has proposed a new national day to celebrate Indigenous Australians in what is being seen as an effort to sidestep growing calls for Australia Day to be moved from January the 26th. It comes as the Byron Shire Council in New South Wales has become the latest in a small group of councils to shift celebrations away from that date. Mr Morrison says an Indigenous day would add to NAIDOC Week celebrations of Australia's rich culture while allowing the current date of Australia Day to remain.
