Tasmania police have charged a 38-year-old man with common assault over an alleged attack on the former prime minister Tony Abbott.

Mr Abbott claims he was walking towards his hotel in Hobart (Thu), when he was approached by a man wearing a 'vote yes for same-sex marriage' badge.

He said he was asked to shake hands, but was then headbutted.

Mr Abbott received minor injuries.
