A family-run foundation in Australia has raised (AU)$2 million since its inception to improve living conditions for thousands of AIDS orphans in South Africa.

The foundation was started by John Schwarz who, in the 1970s as a missionary doctor, took his young family to live with a remote Zulu tribe in South Africa.

The family returned to Australia in 1984 but when Doctor Schwartz visited again 17 years ago, he realised there was a very different need.

Half a generation had been lost to the AIDS epidemic and many children had lost one or both parents.
