Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has left for Israel, to attend commemorations of the centenary of the Battle of Beersheba.

The assault on the town in what was then known as Palestine is viewed as Australia's most significant victory of World War One.

While in Israel, Mr Turnbull will also meet Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with defence and security expected to feature in discussions.
